Swiss National Museum

Three museums – the National Museum Zurich, the Castle of Prangins and the Forum of Swiss History Schwyz – as well as the collections centre in Affoltern am Albis – are united under the umbrella of the Swiss National Museum (SNM). The permanent exhibitions at the museums present Swiss history from its beginnings to the present, and give an insight into Swiss identities and the rich tapestry of our country’s history and culture. Temporary exhibitions on current topics add to the experience. The SNM is also responsible for curating the Guild House ‘Zur Meisen’ Zurich and the Museo doganale Cantine di Gandria.

Comment:
  • The inner courtyard of the National Museum has not been available for events since 5 August 2012 because of the building work in connection with the extension.
  • ‘Other museum guests’ are no longer recorded in the Forum of Swiss History in Schwyz.
  • Counting of visitor numbers in accordance with the requirements of the Association of Swiss Museums (VMS)

In addition to its exhibition venues, the SNM also boasts a collection centre that is a vision come true: the centre accommodates the collections, the workshops of the restorers, the conservation research laboratory as well as the storage management, lending, and exhibit registration departments, and the photo studio.

In 2011, the SNM employed a total of 246 staff in 131.4 full-time equivalent positions (FTE). This includes 19 trainees and three apprentices. With an average workload of 74.4 % the SNM is an attractive employer for people wishing to work part-time. In 2011 the SNM reported a balance sheet total of 10.7 million Swiss francs and an annual budget of around 30 million Swiss francs (not including accommodation costs). More key performance indicators are available in the annual report of SNM.
